Why Are My Leg Veins Suddenly More Visible?

New blue, purple, or red veins can seem to show up almost overnight, especially around the calves, thighs, or ankles. Sometimes the change is cosmetic, but newly noticeable veins can also reflect changes in how blood moves through the legs.

Our team at L.A. Vein Center in Sherman Oaks evaluates spider veins and other vein concerns. Dr. Larisse Lee is board-certified in vascular surgery and general surgery. She earned her medical degree at Stanford, completed her general surgery residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, and completed a vascular surgery fellowship at New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell/Columbia Presbyterian.

What Makes Leg Veins Stand Out More?

Spider veins are small red, blue, or purple vessels close to the skin. Varicose veins are larger and may look twisted, enlarged, or raised. Both can become easier to notice over time, even when it feels like they appeared suddenly.

Several factors can contribute:

  • Aging
  • Family history
  • Pregnancy and hormonal changes
  • Long periods of sitting or standing
  • Weakened valves inside the veins

When vein valves stop closing well, blood can move backward and collect in the legs. That added pressure can make veins near the surface more prominent.

When Should New Leg Veins Be Checked?

A few new spider veins do not automatically mean you have a circulation problem. Pay closer attention to how quickly they are changing and whether other symptoms appear.

Have new or worsening veins checked if they become raised or painful or occur with swelling, heaviness, itching, cramping, or skin changes. Sudden one-sided swelling, redness, warmth, or significant leg pain deserves prompt medical attention because those symptoms can occur with a blood clot.

When we need a closer look at circulation, a vein ultrasound can evaluate blood flow and check for venous insufficiency.

What Can Be Done About Visible Veins?

Treatment depends on the type, size, and cause of the vein. We use sclerotherapy for spider veins and smaller varicose veins. Microphlebectomy may be appropriate for certain varicose veins just beneath the skin. If deeper vein reflux is contributing, treatment can be based on the ultrasound findings and your symptoms.
