What to Expect Before, During, and After Sclerotherapy

Woman's clear, smooth legs after sclerotherapy for spider veins in Los Angeles, CA If you’re dealing with spider veins or small varicose veins, sclerotherapy is a safe, minimally invasive treatment that can help restore confidence in your skin. Whether you’re just starting your research or have already scheduled your appointment, it’s always a good idea to know what to expect before, during, and after the procedure to set you up for the best results.

At LA Vein Center, sclerotherapy treatments are performed by Dr. Larisse Lee, a board-certified vascular and general surgeon with advanced training from top institutions including Stanford, Harvard, and Weill Cornell. With a strong background in research and a commitment to excellence, Dr. Lee offers expert, personalized care to help patients achieve healthier, vein-free legs.

Before Sclerotherapy: Preparing for Treatment

Preparation is straightforward. Dr. Lee will take a detailed medical history and examine the treatment areas. You may be asked to avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and certain supplements that thin the blood. You should also refrain from using self-tanners and lotions on the day of the procedure.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring compression stockings as recommended. These stockings play a vital role in recovery and vein healing.

During the Procedure: Quick and Comfortable

Sclerotherapy is typically performed in the office and takes about 30-45 minutes. Dr. Lee will carefully inject a solution right into the problem veins using a fine needle. The solution will irritate the vein lining, causing it to collapse and eventually fade.

You may feel some mild burning or tingling where the injections are given, but pain is generally minimal. Most patients tolerate the procedure well and don’t require anesthesia.

After Sclerotherapy: Recovery and Results

One of the benefits of sclerotherapy is that there’s little to no downtime. You’ll be encouraged to walk right after the procedure to promote circulation. However, avoid strenuous exercise, hot baths, and sun exposure for a few days.

Wearing compression stockings for the recommended period (usually one to two weeks) helps ensure optimal healing. Some bruising, redness, or small raised areas at the injection sites are normal and typically resolve within a few days.

Visible improvement often occurs within three to six weeks for spider veins, while larger varicose veins may take a few months. Dr. Lee with let you know if you require multiple sessions depending on severity.
