If you’re wondering if Xeomin injections are right for you, check out our FAQ below.
What is Xeomin®?
Xeomin® is a neuromodulator, in the same category as BOTOX® and Dysport®. It is made from the botulinum toxin type A and when injected it stops muscles from contracting. Xeomin® originally received FDA approval for treatment of cervical dystonia, where the neck muscles contract involuntarily causing the head to twist, and blepharospasm, involuntary tight closure of the eyelids.
More recently, it gained approval for aesthetic treatment of lines and wrinkles on the upper third of the face: crow’s feet, the 11s, and forehead lines.

How Does Xeomin® Work?
All neuromodulators work the same way. When injected into a muscle, they block the nerve messages sent from the muscle to the brain. Because the brain doesn’t receive messages to contract the muscle, the muscle stays relaxed. Certain wrinkles form due to muscle contractions under the skin when we make expressions such as frowning, showing surprise, and the like. By stopping the muscle contractions, neuromodulators stop the wrinkle from forming.
What Can I Expect from the Xeomin® Injections?
At L.A. Vein Center, Dr. Lee and our nurse inject Xeomin® with a very tiny needle, and it is not injected to great depth. Most patients equate the feeling to that of a pinprick and do not feel the need for topical numbing prior to their session. However, if you would like that, we can provide numbing.
What is Recovery Like After Xeomin® Injections?
There is no recovery. You may have some slight redness and very minor swelling at the injection sites that lasts about a day. You need to refrain from rubbing the injection locations, however, as this can make the Xeomin® migrate to an unintended muscle. After your session, which only takes 10-15 minutes, you can get right back to work or your normal activities.

Before & After Xeomin Injections
Am I a Good Candidate for Xeomin® Injections?
The most ideal candidates for Xeomin® injections are patients in overall good health who are looking to eliminate the appearance of frown lines on their face and do not have allergic reactions to the toxins found in most cosmetic injections. Patients should also have a realistic expectation of achieving their cosmetic goals as Xeomin® is not meant to change the entire shape or structure of your face. It has not been found if Xeomin® will have noticeable benefits for patients under 18 years of age.
How is Xeomin different from Botox?
The difference between Xeomin® and BOTOX® is purity. Xeomin® contains nothing but the botulinum toxin type A. Some doctors refer to Xeomin as the “naked injectable” because of this. BOTOX® has some added surface proteins in addition to the toxin. Some people can have a reaction to these proteins. In those people, Xeomin® may not cause a reaction.
How Long Before I See Results with Xeomin®?
Xeomin® doesn’t provide instant results. It takes from 3-4 days for the botulinum toxin to block the nerve messages and relax the injected muscle.
How Long Will My Results Last with Xeomin®?
Your metabolism can affect the duration of your results, but for most people Xeomin® erases wrinkles for about four months. At some point, your body will absorb the now-inert Xeomin® and the muscle will begin to contract again, which we allow the wrinkles to return. Another Xeomin® session will maintain your results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still make facial expressions after Xeomin?
Yes, when administered by a skilled provider, Xeomin allows you to maintain natural facial expressions. It targets only the muscles responsible for wrinkles, leaving surrounding areas unaffected so you can still smile, frown, and express yourself normally.
What happens if I stop getting Xeomin injections?
If you stop receiving Xeomin, your muscles will gradually return to their normal activity, and the appearance of wrinkles will slowly return over time. Your skin won't worsen or age faster; it will simply resume its natural aging process.
At what age should I start Xeomin?
There's no one-size-fits-all age to start Xeomin. Many people begin in their late 20s or early 30s for preventative treatment, while others wait until fine lines and wrinkles become more visible. Your provider can help determine the right time based on your goals and skin condition.
How often can I get Xeomin?
Most people receive Xeomin injections every three to four months to maintain optimal results. However, treatment frequency may vary depending on how your body responds and your aesthetic goals. Your provider will recommend a schedule that fits your needs.
Does Xeomin last longer than Botox?
Xeomin and Botox typically last about three to four months. However, some individuals report that Xeomin lasts slightly longer or kicks in faster due to its highly purified formula. Results can vary from person to person.
Will switching from Botox to Xeomin affect my results?
Switching from Botox to Xeomin is generally smooth and does not negatively impact results. In fact, some patients prefer Xeomin for its cleaner formula, which may help reduce the risk of resistance over time.
Is Xeomin safe before a big event or vacation?
Yes, Xeomin is safe to get before an event or trip, but it's best to schedule your treatment at least one to two weeks in advance. This allows time for results to take full effect and for any minor swelling or bruising to subside.
Can I drink alcohol before or after Xeomin treatment?
You should not drink alcohol for at least 24 hours before and after your injections, as it can increase bruising and swelling.
