Liposuction Versus SmartLipo: Which is Right For You?
- Posted on: Apr 10 2016
When people think of liposuction, they may tend to think only of surgical liposuction using general anesthesia. Traditional liposuction involved significant surgery, but it is not the only option today. SmartLipo is a minimally invasive laser-guided liposuction solution that does not involve major surgery. Which is right for you?
How the Procedures Work
With traditional liposuction, general anesthesia is often required. Many body parts are often done together making the recovery longer. The cannulas also tend to be larger in size increasing the risk of bruising and contour irregularity.
SmartLipo requires only a local anesthetic in the area being treated. This anesthetic will provide numbing enough to minimize any discomfort during the procedure, and it allows patients to avoid the risk of major general anesthesia. The doctor will make a very small incision (so small that stitches aren’t even needed afterward) and will then place a tiny cannula in the area where the fat is. The laser is guided through the cannula so that it heats up and melts the targeted fat cells. The melted fat can be removed via suction.
Recovery from Liposuction and SmartLipo
Traditional surgical liposuction carries with it a longer recovery. Because surgeries requiring general anesthesia require extra recovery time, most liposuction patients need anywhere from several days to two weeks to recover properly.
SmartLipo using local anesthesia has a much easier and faster recovery. Patients are often back to their normal routine just days after the procedure. Some patients can even go back to work the next day after SmartLipo.
