Microphlebectomy in Los Angeles, CA

While they are usually unharmful, many patients find that varicose veins can impact their self-confidence and how they feel about their appearance. Thankfully, treatments like microphlebectomy, which targets varicose veins, can eliminate them and help patients find relief from the pain or discomfort they can cause.

At LA Vein Center in Sherman Oaks, California, Dr. Lee and our dedicated team prioritize patient comfort, safety, and satisfaction. We offer a range of services to help you achieve smooth, vein-free skin.

What Is Microphlebectomy?

Microphlebectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that involves making several tiny incisions in the skin to remove varicose veins that sit just underneath the surface. Although patients may begin to feel a light pinprick sensation during the procedure, this treatment is usually not painful as each surgical slit is quite small. After this technique, patients can enjoy their varicose-vein-free appearance for a lifetime.

What to Expect During a Microphlebectomy

During a microphlebectomy, Dr. Lee will first mark the veins to be treated while you’re standing to identify the problem areas. Once the veins are marked, you will lie down comfortably and we’ll apply local anesthesia to minimize discomfort.

Dr. Lee will then make several tiny incisions along the vein and use specialized hooks to gently remove it through these incisions. The procedure usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the number and size of veins being treated. Afterward, compression bandages are applied to aid healing and reduce swelling. You can expect to resume normal activities shortly after the procedure, although you should avoid high-intensity activities for a short period.

Who Is a Candidate for Microphlebectomy?

Patients who have varicose veins close to the skin’s surface and are suffering from pain or discomfort in the legs because of them may benefit the most from a microphlebectomy. Candidates should be in overall good health and free from active skin infections.

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have any other underlying health conditions that may affect your skin’s ability to heal from wounds, this treatment may not be suitable for you. This treatment is also not recommended for patients who may be prone to blood clotting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Many Adults in the U.S. Have Varicose Veins?

Approximately 23% of adults in the U.S. are affected by varicose veins. This condition is more common in women, but men can also experience varicose veins.

What Are the Symptoms of Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins often present as swollen, twisted veins visible just under the skin. Common symptoms include a heavy or achy feeling in the legs, burning, throbbing, muscle cramping, and swelling in the lower legs. Additionally, some individuals might experience itching around the veins and changes in skin color in the affected area.

What Are the Benefits of Microphlebectomy?

The benefits of microphlebectomy include the complete removal of visible varicose veins, relief from pain or discomfort caused by the veins, minimal scarring due to the small incisions, and a quick recovery time with little to no downtime required.

Are There Any Risks With Microphlebectomy?

Besides the small stinging or pinprick sensation during the procedure, there are typically no serious risks involved with a microphlebectomy. Because the incisions for this treatment are so minimal, there is usually no scarring.

What Is Recovery Like After a Microphlebectomy?

There is little to no downtime at all. You can walk and return to your normal routines immediately after a microphlebectomy treatment. However, it’s important to avoid high-intensity activity for the next two weeks. We may recommend compression socks and bandages while you recover to keep your skin protected and prevent blood clots for several weeks. However, most patients don’t need to take time off work to recover, as this procedure doesn't significantly impact their ability to walk and move around.

How Long Will My Results Last?

Once the varicose vein has been removed, there is no risk of that vein appearing again in the future. This treatment results in permanent removal. However, patients need to maintain realistic expectations regarding this surgery. Keep in mind that as the body ages, new varicose veins may pop up and form again. If that happens, the team at LA Vein Center will be happy to welcome all patients back for a follow-up procedure.

What Are the Contraindications for Microphlebectomy?

Microphlebectomy is not suitable for patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have underlying health conditions that may affect their skin's ability to heal from wounds. It is also not recommended for patients prone to blood clotting or those with active skin infections.

What Are Other Options for Treating Varicose Veins?

Other options for treating varicose veins include sclerotherapyVarithenaradiofrequency ablation, and lifestyle changes such as exercise, weight management, and wearing compression stockings. Each treatment option has its own benefits and risks, and Dr. Lee can help determine the best course of action for your case.

What causes varicose veins?

Varicose veins develop when the valves inside your veins weaken and stop pushing blood efficiently back toward the heart. This causes blood to pool, leading the veins to enlarge and bulge. Genetics, pregnancy, aging, obesity, prolonged standing or sitting, and hormonal changes all increase the risk.

When should I consider seeing a vein specialist?

You should see a vein specialist if you experience leg pain, cramping, swelling, heaviness, visible bulging veins, or skin changes around the ankles. If your symptoms worsen over time, affect your daily activities, or if conservative measures no longer provide relief, a specialist can diagnose the underlying cause and recommend treatment.

How can I ensure varicose veins aren't getting worse?

Wearing compression stockings, elevating your legs, staying active, staying at a healthy weight, avoiding extended sitting or standing, and reducing high-impact activities can help slow the progression of varicose veins. While these steps don't eliminate existing veins, they can reduce symptoms and prevent new ones from forming.

Can microphlebectomy be performed on both legs at once?

Yes. Microphlebectomy can safely be performed on both legs during the same appointment, depending on the severity and extent of your veins. Your provider will determine whether treating both legs at once is the most efficient and comfortable approach for you.

Are there any restrictions on flying or travel after microphlebectomy?

Most patients can travel short distances within a few days of their procedure. For long flights or car rides, it's best to wait one to two weeks and follow your provider's instructions regarding compression stockings and walking breaks to reduce the risk of blood clots.

How soon will I see results?

Many patients notice improvement almost immediately, but bruising and swelling can temporarily mask results. As the treated veins dissolve and the skin heals, you can expect your legs to continue improving over the next several weeks.

Are the results permanent?

Yes. Microphlebectomy permanently removes the treated veins, meaning they will not return. However, the procedure does not prevent new varicose veins from developing if the underlying vein disease persists.

How do results compare to laser vein treatments?

Microphlebectomy physically removes large, bulging varicose veins, offering immediate cosmetic and symptomatic improvement. Laser vein treatments (such as EVLA or RFA) seal deeper underlying veins that cause varicosities. These treatments are often complementary; laser treats the source, while microphlebectomy removes the visible surface veins.

How many treatments will I need?

Most patients achieve full results with a single session per leg. If there are multiple clusters of varicose veins or extensive disease, your provider may recommend several sessions spaced apart.

How do I prepare for microphlebectomy?

Preparation may include avoiding certain medications, such as blood thinners; wearing loose clothing; and bringing your compression stockings to your appointment. Your provider will also perform an ultrasound beforehand to map the veins that require treatment.

Do I need someone to drive me home?

Many patients can drive themselves home if only local anesthesia is used. However, if you are anxious about the procedure or will be taking any calming medication, arranging a ride is recommended.

Does microphlebectomy treat the underlying vein disease?

Microphlebectomy removes the visible varicose veins but does not treat the underlying venous insufficiency that causes them. If ultrasound shows that deeper veins are refluxing, your provider may recommend laser or radiofrequency ablation in combination with microphlebectomy for long-lasting results.
