Liposuction procedures have consistently sat in a high position on the Most Wanted list of cosmetic surgeries. In 2017, more than 240,000 liposuction procedures were conducted in the United States alone. This demonstrates the strong demand for refined physical shape and also the difficulty many people encounter trying to eliminate stubborn fat from areas such as the abdomen, thighs, backs of the arms, and even under the chin.
Since liposuction was first performed in the mid-1970s, numerous techniques for removing difficult fat have been developed. One of the first significant advances was the development of the tumescent liposuction technique in the mid-80s in which it became possible to use a smaller cannula for fat extraction. The development of SmartLipo in 2006 was another giant leap forward in cosmetic surgery.
How SmartLipo Differs from Traditional Liposuction
Traditional liposuction, as well as laser-assisted techniques, are all advantageous. One may not be completely “better” than another, but there are differences that patients should understand as they make their decision about liposuction:
- The benefit available with SmartLipo is the use of laser heat before fat extraction. By liquefying fat at the onset of the procedure, cells are more easily removed.
- Skin benefits. Heat offers a significant benefit that matters for most liposuction patients: skin tightening. When laser energy is directed at fat cells, it also gets absorbed into the dermal tissues where collagen lays the foundation for smooth, firm skin. Heating collagen strands cause them to contract. This can be an advantageous aspect for patients with tissue laxity.
- Liquefied fat cells move quite easily through the cannula powered by gentle suction. Studies show that this results in less bleeding during surgery and less bruising afterward. While traditional liposuction may require up to 6 weeks of compression garment wear to control swelling and bruising, SmartLipo reduces the total recovery time by several days, sometimes weeks.
