Botox Versus Xeomin: Which is Better?

Since both Botox and Xeomin have the same active ingredient, botulinum toxin A, it may appear that they’re the same product. While Botox and Xeomin are used for the same reason — reduction and prevention of wrinkles — they’re not identical. Here are the differences and similarities in Botox and Xeomin.

The Additive

The most obvious difference between Botox and Xeomin is that Xeomin contains no additives. Because Xeomin doesn’t have the additives present in Botox, a patient’s antibody reaction may be decreased. If your immune system isn’t producing antibodies to fight the botulinum toxin A, the treatment may be more likely to be successful. The lack of additives may also make Xeomin a better choice for anyone who is sensitive to or allergic to the Botox formula.

While Botox does contain additives, those additives aren’t harmful to the body, and in fact those additional proteins may help the product last longer. In terms of effect, both Botox and Xeomin do the same thing: Reduce lines and wrinkles in the forehead and eye areas.

The Longevity

Botox and Xeomin last for about the same amount of time: 3 to 6 months on average. Some patients could potentially experience even longer correction once the product has been used for a while. Most patients find that touch-ups a couple of times a year allow them to retain the smooth-faced appearance they desire.

Which is Right For You?

Because the products are so similar, it can be hard to decide which will work best for you. Dr. Lee at the L.A. Vein Center is happy to discuss your options and desired results with you anytime. If Botox turns out to be the wrong product for you, Xeomin may just be ideal. One of these products can be used to help you get rid of the crow’s feet, the between the brow lines, and the horizontal forehead lines at last.
